Folks often ask me whether or not they need a lawyer to represent them in their Social Security Disability or Supplemental Security Income claim. It's a good question and, given the fact I am a lawyer, you'll have to forgive my bias, but anyone who has been denied benefits should at least consult with a lawyer.
In my experience, the folks who doubt they need an attorney often say something like "my doctor is going to write that I'm totally disabled so I'm not worried." Think about it, if that were all the evidence that was required, you probably wouldn't have been denied in the first place.
Your claim for benefits is not a medical determination. Your claim is a legal determination that requires medical and other types of evidence. In my experience, doctors don't know what evidence is required because knowing what evidence is required to get disability benefits has nothing to do with the practice of medicine.
If you've been denied Social Security Disability or Supplemental Security Income benefits, I strongly recommend that you talk to a lawyer. The consultation is free and will be well worth your time.
