I recently retweeted a local attorney's simple, but important advice on the subject of child support. I happened to see her at the courthouse today and, although I'm not sure what made us start talking about this, the advice came up again today. Her advice is that if you can't afford to pay all your child support, pay what you can.
In North Carolina, not paying your child support could put you in jail. Often times because of some change in circumstances, folks won't pay their child support or any amount toward it, but at the hearing they inform that the judge that they can pay something. Well if you can pay something, then pay something.
There's no downside to paying what you can. Paying what you can will demonstrate to the judge that you're attempting to comply with the child support order and will make progress toward paying the amount of child support you're ultimately determined to owe.
So if you can't pay all your child support, pay what you can.
Thanks for reading,
Eric
